Joanna, she needs your Help

be a part of our family...

We are a small family, and our children desperately need your love and care... and at least a few basic necessities of life. These are some of the ways in which YOU can change their lives and in doing so, maybe, help to change the future...
  • Spare some of your precious time to teach the children. This does not mean you have be a qualified teacher. The little children have yet so much to learn. Qualified teachers, including those retired, will of course be able to make a tremendous contribution to the educational needs of the older children. Just a few hours of your time, even if only at the weekends or whenever you have the time, will be much appreciated.
  • Your old clothes could be the finery our children wear.
  • Even a one-eyed teddy bear could mean hours of fun and bring a smile on their faces.
  • Foodstuff, particularly dry provision (grains, pulses) & preserves (pickels, jams), are easy to store... We have only two domestic refrigerators.
  • Bed linen, towels and toiletries (soaps, talcum powder, washing soaps) would help them live a healthy life.
  • Your love and affection... show these children you care by spending some time with them.
  • These kids may be homeless, but they have big dreams... help make their dreams a reality by funding their education. And for those children completing their education, you could help them secure a good job.
  • Monetary contribution, however small, will still be big blessings for us.
For cash contributions, you may either use PayPal or direct transferto our bank account. You do not need a PayPal account to donate. Look for the "Don't have a PayPal account?" on the PayPal donation page.

All for my children

Posted On Saturday, November 08, 2008 at 03:27:31 PM
A retired schoolteacher has been running a foundation for the past 14 years with an unflinching dedication born out of pure love for the orphan children
Shail Desai Madh  Freakin' Awesome! Freakin' Awesome! Freakin' Awesome! Freakin' Awesome! Freakin' Awesome!
Call her a one-man army or an angel in disguise; Joanna Buthello could aptly fit in the roles of either. If you ask an outsider, they'd tag her the former title but for the orphans at the Joanna Buthello Educational Foundation, she's nothing short of a Fairy Godmother.

Currently, housing 65 children under a single roof, Joanna Buthello has been single-handedly running the orphanage for the past 14 years. With no considerable funding for the same, the former school teacher makes ends meet with her retirement pension. The only help she receives is from well-wishers, who get in touch with her and donate as per the requirements of the children.
But these hardships have been anything but a hindrance for this determined woman. She educates the children living there on her own, believing that she can do justice to their future with her past teaching experience. "They could go to the Bombay Municipal Corporation school close by, but I think they'd do better under my tutelage. I follow the Open Board system where we conduct our own exams each year and when the students get to the tenth grade, we have a supervisor coming in to conduct the exams," she says. If results are anything to go by, three of the students are now in their first year of junior college in the city.

The local police and some good Samaritans usually bring in these kids and till date, Buthello has never said no to a child who wants to make the orphanage a home. Housing 65 children under a single roof and looking after the basic needs like food, footwear and clothing can also be difficult at times. The needs are plenty and resources few, but Buthello somehow manages to pull it off. "I wish I could do a little more for these children. It can get really trying at times but things work out with God's grace," she adds.

Dheeraj Kathuria frequently drops in at the orphanage with his family. This Diwali was no different as he watched the kids enjoy the crackers that he brought with him. "To see the joy on their faces is the most rewarding feeling and it doesn't take much to contribute to their well being. Even with the lack of facilities, I have never seen anyone squabble over a certain item. Such is their upbringing. Their needs are basic and I'm sure more people can come forward to support them," he says.

EDEN in MADH Island

The Little Angels Ashram-Orphanage in Mumbai India
Tousha and her kids
The hut has been demolished
and is currently being
reconstructed as a ground
plus one floor structure. The
orphanage has raised funds
covering only a fourth of the
estimated cost.

project.
Eden
Project Eden is aimed at supporting this orphanage financially and providing
a consistent supply of resources for food, clothing, Bibles and school books. It
is anticipated that part of the project plan (Phase 2) will also involve the
expansion and renovation of the orphanage
As I reflected on my life, I had a lot to thank God for. He has blessed me with
family, friends and relatives. I have so much, yet I experienced a void in my
life. I felt like life had to be more than just living for ourselves. Yes, it is
great to have the necessities and luxuries, but what about a purpose. Surely
God had a greater purpose in mind when He created us. Of course He did, we
were made to glorify Him

In my prayers, I began to seek direction. I asked the Lord to guide me in the
direction He wanted for me. And as I prayed, after approximately 8 months,
God laid it on my heart that He wanted me to start an orphanage in India. I
was born in India, spent my teen years in the U.S.A. and migrated to Canada
after I started a family. Being born and raised in India, I saw a lot of poverty.
Poverty in India is prevalent and widespread. It is heartbreaking to watch
lovely children live with no hope or future. When I was a child, I often
wondered about a solution to such a big problem. God laid it on my heart that
the solution was a little one - give the children hope and show them love.
At first, I felt overwhelmed with what God was asking my family to do, and I
had fears and doubts. My biggest fear was the feasibility of overseeing a
project this big, from so far away in Canada. But when God asks you to do
something, he gives you the resources to follow through. He brought me to
the realization that I needed someone who has a heart for God and wants to
serve him selflessly. Someone we can trust in India to run this orphanage,
while I do all I can to support this initiative at this end.

In that vein, I came across The Little Angel's Ashram that is run by Joanna
Buthello. It's an orphanage located in Madh Island, Mumbai, and is currently
home to 65 orphaned children. Mrs Buthello who is a retired school teacher
and is a Christian woman who serves the Lord with all her heart, has turned
her little 300 sq ft home into an orphanage where she teaches the children by
day and turns the premises into a home at night. During the day, the children
put up the blackboards to study. At night the girls retire inside the house and
the boys sleep out in the yard.

Project Eden's goal is to support this orphanage initially, and also support
other such orphanages in India. To provide hope to the children who are the
future. To love them and show them that there are people in this world who
still care to make it a better place. To share the gospel so they have
nourishment for their soul, to help them to get an education and empower
them as individuals to make their life a success, so they may also "pay it
forward". To expand the orphanage so that it may be a home for more
children. And most importantly, glorify God by living a life in service to those
in need.

Sanitary facilities are a
challenge... Till a couple of
years ago, there was only one
toilet and many of the
children had to defecate in
an open field nearby. About
two years ago, some local
benefactors built two more
toilets. However, 65 children
sharing just three very basic
toilets is a tough juggling act.

a visit to Joannas Ashram

4th July 2010, Visit to Joanna Buthello’s Ashram

Hi Friends, Happy Good Morng..!!!
This Sunday was very special to us and I would like to share with you the moments that we cannot forget all our life.
We visited the Joanna Buthello’s Ashram at Madh, Malad West. Joanna Buthello is a retired school teacher and she runs this ashram for the orphans. You can call her a one man army.  She provides shelter, Education and Health care to 70 children residing here.
I came to know about this ashram from Richelle, my office friend. And as part of our mission we decided to visit the ashram and donate the clothes and toys that we had collected. When we reached the ashram we were greeted by her children and within 5 min we all were like friends, I began to feel so close to them. We thought that the children wont leave us if we spend more time with them. All these children need is Love and Affection. And you will get back even more.
I thank Richelle, Chirag and Dr. Ashwini to be part of this event…!!!
I urge everyone to come forward and help and be a part of Joanna Buthello’s Ashram.

Yes, it was really a great and a very touching Sunday. Wont forget the happiness that kid felt when he got a chance to sit on that tricyle, though there were many who wanted to do that.. Thanks to the family who donated the stuff that we could go ahead and donate it to the Buthello’s Ashram.
Its really touching to see that the teacher, Joanna, has built an orphanage with 70 children today from scratch and it would be good to hear her story here, wouldn’t it Sarvesh?
